As you delve into the whirlwind of wedding planning, every decision seems to be of monumental importance, shaping the most memorable day of your life. Among these decisions is a rather unique one: whether or not to attend your cocktail hour. This seemingly simple choice can significantly impact the flow and experience of your big day.

From the joy of extra mingling time to the challenges of tight schedules, we'll dissect each aspect to help you make an informed decision. Whether you dream of a traditional wedding or something more modern and unconventional, understanding the implications of this choice is crucial for a seamless and enjoyable celebration.

PROS

  • You'll have more time to spend with family and friends, especially those from out of town who you may not see often.

  • Being able to attend your cocktail hour typically requires you to take the "first look" and wedding photos before the ceremony. This allows you to spend more time with your partner on your wedding day.

  • You can enjoy your carefully chosen hors d’oeuvres and signature drinks.

  • You'll get to experience every detail you spent countless hours orchestrating.

CONS

  • You’ll have to sacrifice some traditions that may be important to you, including seeing your partner for the first time at the ceremony as you or they walk down the aisle.

how to attend your cocktail hour

In a more traditional setting, the cocktail hour was used to entertain your guests while you took photos with your families and the wedding party. To attend your cocktail hour, you’ll need to give yourself enough time before the ceremony to get ready and take your “first look,” couples portraits, and wedding party photos.

tips

  • Start getting ready earlier in the day.

  • Eat lunch! If you plan to drink, attending your cocktail hour means you will start drinking earlier in the day, therefore longer, and you don’t want to go in on an empty stomach.
